Which stone materials are not suitable for jaw crusher
Jaw crusher is ideal for coarse and medium crushing of hard, high‑abrasion rocks. However, certain materials will cause severe equipment damage, frequent blockages, poor finished‑particle shape or extremely fast wear. These materials are not suitable for processing with jaw crushers.
1. High‑moisture sticky viscous materials
- Typical materials: wet clay‑rich soil, sticky mudstone, wet weathered shale, mucky gravel, heavily mud‑covered raw ore.
- Reasons for incompatibility: Wet sticky materials easily adhere to jaw plates and the crushing chamber inner wall. Material buildup fills tooth gaps, leading to chamber blockage, sharp capacity drop, frequent shutdown for manual cleaning. Jaw crusher relies on extrusion splitting; it has no self‑cleaning function for sticky paste‑like feeds.
- Note: If material contains small amount of surface mud, pre‑screening and de‑watering can help; heavy continuous sticky feeds should avoid jaw crushing.
2. Extremely soft non‑abrasive rocks
- Typical materials: pure gypsum, soft chalk, loose marl, soft coal with low hardness, dry clay lumps.
- Reasons for incompatibility: Jaw crusher produces mainly extrusion splitting force. Soft materials are squeezed into flat, flaky fragments instead of good cubic grains. Tooth gaps get filled with fine powder. Even though liner wear is low, product particle shape is poor, over‑fine powder rate rises sharply. Hammer crusher or roller crusher is more appropriate for soft stone.
3. Materials containing lots of long fibrous impurities
- Typical materials: rock mixed with a large volume of plant roots, fibrous weathered mineral layers, construction waste mixed with dense plastic, cloth, rope and wood scraps.
- Reasons for incompatibility: Fibrous impurities wind around toggle plate, movable jaw shaft and discharge gap. It blocks material discharge, raises equipment operating load, may trigger motor over‑current tripping. Jaw crusher has no cutting structure for fiber contaminants.
4. Materials with high ductile metal impurities mixed in bulk
- Typical situation: ore mixed with large pieces of uncrushable steel, iron rebar, heavy metal chunks.
- Reasons for incompatibility: Metal pieces cannot be crushed by extrusion force. Hard metal foreign bodies stuck between two jaw plates will cause liner cracking, frame deformation, toggle plate forced fracture as safety part triggers. Though jaw has toggle‑plate overload protection, frequent metal intrusions greatly shorten machine service life. Magnetic iron removal must be equipped if such impurity exists; heavy bulk metal should be manually sorted out ahead.
5. Material requiring fine crushing as one‑step output
- Typical demand: trying to get 0‑5 mm finished sand directly from jaw crusher.
- Reasons for incompatibility: Jaw crusher belongs to primary coarse crushing equipment. Its crushing ratio is limited. Forcing narrow discharge opening will cause serious overload, massive material choking, violent vibration and sharp liner consumption. Jaw crusher cannot realize one‑pass sand making. Secondary crushing + sand‑making machine is required for fine aggregate.
6. Special corrosive soluble salt rocks (special reminder)
- Typical materials: raw salt ore, large‑piece carnallite, highly water‑soluble salt rock.
- Reasons for incompatibility: When processing wet salt‑bearing stone, salt brine accelerates rust and corrosion of carbon‑steel frame, shaft and bearing assembly. If no special anti‑corrosion customized jaw crusher is adopted, standard ordinary jaw model is not fit.
