Rust prevention maintenance knowledge for jaw crusher parts

1. Overview

Jaw crusher parts are mostly made of carbon steel and alloy steel. Long-term exposure to dust, rain, humid air, slurry and mineral water will cause electrochemical rust. Rust will accelerate wear, block lubrication gaps, reduce fitting accuracy, lead to jamming, fracture and shortened service life. Anti-rust maintenance runs through production standby, storage, transportation and on-site operation.

2. Key Vulnerable Parts Prone to Rust

  • Main shaft, eccentric shaft, shaft sleeve, bearing inner & outer ring
  • Toggle plate, toggle seat, tension rod and spring assembly
  • Frame, side plates, adjustment wedge block
  • Fasteners: bolts, nuts, washers, pin shafts
  • Lubrication pipelines, oil tank and oil seal mating surfaces Note: Jaw plates (high manganese steel) have better corrosion resistance but still get rusty on the non-working base surface.

3. Rust Prevention Measures in Working Condition

3.1 Daily site management

  1. Keep the crusher foundation and equipment body dry. Clean accumulated slurry, mineral mud and stagnant water around the base after each shift; do not let water soak the base and lower frame.
  2. Cover the equipment with waterproof tarpaulin when production stops for more than 24 hours, especially in open-air plants and rainy seasons.
  3. Prevent ore washing water and slurry from splashing continuously on bare shaft, bolt and adjusting components. Install simple splash guard if necessary.
  4. Check drain holes of bearing housing and oil tank regularly to avoid condensed water accumulation inside the cavity.

3.2 Lubrication & oil film anti-rust

  1. Use qualified anti-rust lubricating grease / hydraulic oil with rust inhibitor. The oil film can isolate air and moisture.
  2. Do not run with insufficient oil. After shutdown, form a complete oil film on the friction mating surface.
  3. Replace oil in time if the oil turns milky (water mixed in). Milky lubricant loses anti-rust ability and will corrode bearing surfaces.

3.3 Surface protection for exposed metal parts

  1. For exposed threaded parts, shaft ends and adjustment screws: apply anti-rust grease regularly.
  2. Damaged paint on frame and side plates should be cleaned of rust spot first, then repaint primer and finish paint timely.
  3. Avoid heavy collision to peel off paint layer during feeding and maintenance.

4. Rust Prevention for Standby & Spare Parts (Long-term Storage)

  1. Clean all mud, old oil and rust spots completely before storage. Blow dry with compressed air; ensure zero moisture.
  2. Apply anti-rust oil or anti-rust wax on machined surfaces (shaft surface, bore, fitting plane).
  3. Wrap precision parts with anti-rust VCI paper, then pack with plastic film for sealing.
  4. Store spare parts in dry, ventilated warehouse, off the ground with pallet; keep away from windows, water pipe leakage and acid/alkaline dust.
  5. Do not stack parts directly on the concrete floor. Concrete releases moisture easily.
  6. Regular inspection cycle: check every 1 month in humid season; check every 3 months in dry season. Reapply anti-rust coating if coating fails.

5. Correct Rust Removal Treatment (When Light Rust Appears)

Important: Heavy pitting rust reduces part strength; evaluate replacement risk after derusting.

  1. Light rust (only surface oxide, no pit): Use wire brush, abrasive cloth to polish, clean, then apply anti-rust grease or paint.
  2. Medium rust: Derust with rust remover (neutral type recommended), rinse and dry thoroughly, then anti-rust protection. Do not leave residual acid on the metal surface.
  3. Rust on bearing raceway and shaft journal: If rust spots cannot be removed smoothly and form pits, the part is recommended to be replaced, otherwise it will cause vibration, heating and bearing burning.

6. Taboos & Common Mistakes

  • ❌ Do not leave water, slurry staying in the frame and bearing housing overnight.
  • ❌ Do not use waste engine oil without anti-rust additive as anti-rust coating.
  • ❌ Do not seal wet parts directly with plastic film; moisture will be sealed inside and accelerate rust.
  • ❌ Do not ignore small rust spots on bolts and pin shafts; rust expansion will cause seizure and cannot be disassembled.
  • ❌ Do not mix rusty spare parts with new parts together.

7. Regular Inspection Checklist

  • Visual check for paint peeling, orange rust on frame
  • Check exposed shaft, bolt, adjustment assembly for rust
  • Check lubricant for emulsification and water content
  • Check bearing housing and oil tank for condensate water
  • Check storage environment of spare parts and integrity of anti-rust wrapping
