Jaw crusher is the primary crushing equipment widely used in mining, quarrying, construction waste recycling and aggregate production lines. Correct model selection based on actual production demands directly affects production capacity, finished particle size, energy consumption and long-term operating cost. 1. Confirm raw material properties
Raw material is the first factor to decide jaw crusher type.
- Material hardness: For high-hardness rocks like granite, basalt, quartzite, heavy-duty jaw crusher with high manganese jaw plates is recommended. Soft materials such as coal, limestone can adopt standard type jaw crusher.
- Maximum feed size: The maximum lump size of incoming ore must match crusher feed opening. Normally, the largest raw block should be less than 80% of jaw crusher feed width to avoid blockage.
- Material moisture and viscosity: Sticky or wet materials need larger discharge opening and enhanced sealing structure to prevent material clogging inside crushing cavity.
2. Match required production capacity
Daily or hourly output demand determines the crusher specification.
- Calculate target hourly throughput according to production schedule.
- Distinguish theoretical capacity and actual working capacity. Actual output is affected by material hardness, feed size and feeding uniformity, so reserve 10%~20% surplus capacity.
- Avoid overloading small model machines; long-term overload will accelerate liner wear and cause frequent shutdowns.
3. Define finished discharge particle size
Discharge size requirement decides the adjustable range of jaw crusher closed side setting.
- Jaw crusher is mostly used for coarse crushing. Its finished product will feed into secondary crushing equipment (cone crusher / impact crusher).
- Select a model whose adjustment range can cover your required coarse crushed size. If smaller discharge is needed, do not narrow CSS excessively, which will sharply reduce capacity and increase wear.
4. Check power and site conditions
- Motor power matching: The selected jaw crusher must be equipped with matched motor. Underpower leads to stalling; excessive power causes wasted electricity.
- Site layout: Fixed jaw crusher is for stationary production plant. Mobile jaw crushing station is suitable for frequent site transfer, construction waste recycling and mountain quarry with limited infrastructure.
- Space, foundation condition, transportation limit also restrict the overall dimension of crusher unit.

- High manganese consumables (jaw plate, toggle plate, cheek plate) are main wearing parts. Check spare part supply and replacement cost of the selected model.
- For long-run projects, prefer models with easy access for maintenance and quick liner replacement.
