How to match jaw crusher with vibrating feeder

Vibrating feeder is the front feeding equipment of jaw crusher. Proper matching directly stabilizes continuous crushing, avoids overloading, blocking and uneven feeding, and protects the jaw crusher from damage caused by oversized lumps or sudden surge of materials.

1. Feeding capacity matching

The rated feeding capacity of the vibrating feeder should be 1.1–1.3 times the hourly throughput of the jaw crusher.

  • If feeder capacity is too small: Jaw crusher runs intermittently, low overall line efficiency.
  • If feeder capacity is too large: Excessive material piles in the crushing chamber, causing choking, motor overcurrent and liner wear acceleration. Example: For a jaw crusher with 80 t/h output, select a feeder with rated capacity of 88–104 t/h.

2. Feed opening and material lump size matching

  • The feeder’s trough width shall not be less than the jaw crusher’s feed opening width. Normally, feeder trough width ≥ jaw feed width + 100–200 mm, to prevent material jamming at the inlet.
  • Maximum lump size of raw ore ≤ 0.75 × jaw crusher feed opening. The feeder can be equipped with a grizzly bar screen to sieve fine materials in advance. Fines bypass the jaw crusher, reduce useless load and improve efficiency.

Note: Grizzly gap must be smaller than the minimum discharge size of jaw crusher.

3. Installation position & angle setting

  • Recommended installation dip angle: 10°–15° for ordinary stone; 5°–10° for sticky, wet material. Too steep leads to uncontrolled rapid feeding; too flat reduces conveying speed.
  • Horizontal alignment: Feeder discharge centerline must align with jaw crusher feed hopper centerline. Offset feeding causes uneven wear on one side of jaw plates.
  • Height layout: Leave sufficient fall space, prevent material direct impact on jaw plate; add buffer liner inside the hopper.

4. Power and control coordination

  • Adopt variable-frequency vibrating feeder as priority. VFD adjusts feeding speed in real time according to jaw crusher load current. When jaw crusher current is high, slow down feeding; when current is low, increase feeding volume. This realizes automatic constant feeding.
  • Fixed-speed feeders are only for small, stable production lines without automatic adjustment.
  • Interlock protection: Set electrical interlock. If jaw crusher stops, the vibrating feeder must stop immediately to avoid material stacking inside the crushing cavity.

5. Material property adjustment

  • Hard, sharp rock: Use thick wear-resistant steel trough plate, reduce feeding speed properly.
  • Wet & sticky ore: Reduce installation angle, increase vibration amplitude, widen grizzly spacing to avoid sticking and blockage.
  • Light bulk material: Lower vibration frequency and amplitude to prevent material flying out.

6. Common mismatching problems & solutions

  1. Material blocking at feed hopper → Increase feeder dip angle or clean grizzly fines; reduce lump size.
  2. One-sided jaw plate heavy wear → Re-calibrate center alignment of feeder and crusher.
  3. Jaw crusher frequently trips overloaded → Reduce feeder maximum feeding rate or switch to VFD controlled feeder.
  4. Feeder trough wears fast → Add replaceable wear liners at discharge impact zone.
